Working on Terry Fox Sculpture : A Legacy of Hope
It was early 2025 when I met Christiano De Araujo, one of the most genuinely kind and enjoyable artists I’ve had the chance to work with. I was lucky that our connection eventually led to an opportunity to join his team for Terry Fox Sculpture : A Legacy of Hope.
Christiano was the lead artist and project owner, and I contributed as a member of the fabrication team. Being involved in a project connected to such a meaningful Canadian figure was something I genuinely valued, regardless of the size of my role.
Discovering Terry Fox
There’s also a slightly embarrassing part of this story.
As someone who was still relatively new to Canada, I have to admit that for the first couple of years after moving here, I didn’t really know who Terry Fox was.
Once I learned his story and understood what he had set out to do with the Marathon of Hope, I was genuinely moved by it.
I had run a half marathon myself in 2023, and at the time I remember feeling pretty proud of that achievement. Learning about the distance Terry covered day after day, and the circumstances under which he did it, put my own experience into a completely different perspective.
It also made contributing to this sculpture more meaningful to me than simply working on another fabrication project.
Behind the Terry Fox Sculpture
My involvement in the project extended across different stages of the process, from design development through fabrication and finishing. As part of Christiano’s team, I contributed to foam and wax sculpting, fabrication, polishing, and other hands-on stages involved in bringing the sculpture from concept into physical form.
Working across different parts of the process gave me the opportunity to see how a large figurative sculpture evolves through many stages, and how much hands-on work goes into translating an artistic concept into a finished physical piece.
The Unveiling
One of my favorite moments came at the unveiling of the sculpture. I had the opportunity to meet Terry Fox’s niece and take a photo with her beside the finished work.
It was a small moment, but a memorable one. After spending time working on the sculpture and learning more about Terry’s story along the way, being there to see the finished work unveiled made the whole experience feel complete.
I’m grateful to Christiano for trusting me to be part of his team and giving me the opportunity to contribute to a project with such a meaningful story behind it.
